About us
Welcome to the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union and its re-vamped website. The site is still in development and will grow considerably in the coming months, but we hope there is enough to whet your appetite.
We are an association of amateur and professional naturalists interested in a wide range of aspects of natural history. We cover the 'old' county of Yorkshire, as individuals and through our many Affiliated Societies, many of which are local naturalists' groups. The YNU organises field meetings, training sessions and conferences throughout the county to which all are welcome (View the Events Calendar).
The YNU publishes 2 issues of the YNU Bulletin and 4 issues of The Naturalist each year, and an annual Bird Report. These, plus the annual Butterfly and Moths report produced by the Yorkshire Branch of Butterfly Conservation are all free to members. It also publishes books on natural history subjects from time to time. See Publications
Recording
Much of the YNU's activity involves recording wildlife, and most of the records obtained are sent to the North and East Yorkshire Ecological Data Centre (NEYEDC) and then passed to the National Biodiversity Network via a database portal known as the Gateway. To assist us all in producing better records for this national database, the NBN has produced a series of booklets and leaflets which are well worth acquiring.
