Red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris are found only in the very north-west of Yorkshire, close to the Cumbrian border. Elsewhere they have been forced out by habitat loss and by both competition with the ubiquitous grey squirrel Sciurus carolinensis and a disease which this introduced species carries.
