Yorkshire Naturalists' Union

Checklists of Yorkshire's flora and fauna

INTRODUCTION TO THE YORKSHIRE CHECKLISTS

One of the main reasons the Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union came into existence was to establish a flora and fauna of the County of Yorkshire. Several attempts have been made over the years to compile a complete list of the many thousands of species, but the shear size of the task has always overcome ambition.

In 2007 a small group of members came together to try and establish a working checklist using modern technology, with the idea that we could publish this list on the YNU website to celebrate our 150th year. This we are now able to do.

The task has proved just as difficult in 2010 as it was in 1877 when the first attempt was made via the then Transactions of the Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union. These Transactions, the last of which was published in 1903 made a valiant attempt but the project proved too difficult and costly.

The checklists available on this website can and will be updated as the groups become better known and recorded. However, some groups of animals and plants do not at present have recorders who feel confident to produce defined checklists. We would be interested in being contacted by any reader who may be able to help complete or update any of the lists made available on this site or who may be able to establish lists for those groups for which a list is not currently available.
